Own a piece of Princeton history! Treasured by New Jersey history buffs, Clarke Cottage, circa 1725, is a charming museum piece. Located in the Princeton Battlefield/Stony Brook Settlement Historic District, the home transports its visitors to a bygone era. It is an excellent surviving example of a vernacular Colonial dwelling with many architectural details still intact. Two of its walls still have the original clapboard. A Georgian post and beam house which was likely built in the late 1700'swas moved to this location and added to the first generation two-room house. The home was originally part of the Benjamin Clarke farm and remained in the Clarke family until 1894. After a brief ownership by the Schenck family, Moses Taylor Pyne purchased the property in 1898 to add to his English country gentleman's estate and farm known today as the Governor's residence - Drumthwacket. A renovation in 1942 brought the home into the 20th Century. Purchased in 1993 by a Princeton preservationist, Clarke Cottage has been lovingly cherished and the new owner will inherit a wealth of interesting historical documents pertaining to the Quaker Settlement area, the evolution of Clarke Cottage and the property's noted tree specimens. A foyer/sitting room with bay window introduces the gracious living room with fireplace and built-in shelves. Step down to the dining room for a cozy candlelit dinner and marvel at the craftsmanship of the original fireplace. The fireplace was most likely the cooking source in the 1700's and remains a decorative focal point. The inviting country kitchen features hardwood flooring and a skylight. A powder room off the foyer completes the first floor. The upper bedroom level has two wings. One bedroom is in the original section and two more bedrooms and a full bath are in the wing accessed from the main staircase. This home is complemented by a picturesque 1.26 acre property. Indigenous flora adorn the expansive park-like lawn which offers a stone walking path. Strategically placed hand-cut stone benches offer respite from gardening chores or a destination for relaxing and enjoying the natural environment. Superb location -- walking distance to Battlefield Park and just minutes to Palmer Square and major shopping venues.…
